What is a Duplicate Bridge Competition ?
For those of you who only play social bridge and have never played duplicate, here is a brief explanation.
A duplicate competition is a bridge contest in which each hand is fully bid and played at one table, after which the very same hand is bid and played by entirely different people at another table. Everything except the players remains the same: the cards, the position of the dealer, the vulnerability - everything you can think of. The re-play duplicates the original conditions.
How can the same hand be played more than once? The answer is the use of duplicate boards.
The purpose of the duplicate board is to make it easy to pass the 52 cards of a deal to another table with the 4 original hands intact. The board has 4 pockets and each of the 4 original hands goes into one of those pockets. The board can then be passed from one table to another without any risk of upsetting the arrangements of the cards.
In social bridge you score according to the score sheet. In duplicate bridge, you and your partner are competing against other pairs who play the same cards so that the partnership with the best result gets the highest score at the end of the competition.
One partnership can choose to sit North/South at the table and another partnership can sit East/West.
After each round of the competition, the North/South partnership remains stationary, BUT the East/West partnership moves to a different table. At the same time, the boards are moved in the opposite direction. This enables each partnership to play all of the boards during the competition.
