Great
Places & Great Names
Wednesday 2 June
King
Herod, Hannah Senesh & Meir Dizengoff
Our
first port of call is the old
port of
Caesarea for a
cinematic expedition taking us through Caesarea’s
history.
The interactive three-
dimensional project introduces us to
influential historical figures such as King Herod, Rabbi Akiva, Saint Paul,
Hannah Senesh and the Baron de Rothschild. We’ll climb the Time Tower which
overlooks the magical sights to view the course of history.
At nearby Kibbutz Sdot
Yam, at the
Antiquities Museum, we shall see the sculptures
in the park. The museum houses finds from the bottom of the sea - fragments
of sculptures, columns, coins, pottery and utensils from King Hordus.
The
kibbutz is also the home of the
Hannah Senesh House, a
museum depicting the heroic story of the young woman who volunteered for the
British army and parachuted behind enemy lines during World War II. Hannah
was captured and tortured but would not betray her comrades. She was
executed by the Germans in 1944.
For
lunch you may either bring a picnic or eat in the Kibbutz Sdot Yam dining
room (not included in the price).
Our
final call of the day, the Glass Factory Museum
(the
Mizgaga),
is at the Port of Dor
on Kibbutz Nachsholim.
In the days of the first Aliyah, wine was
shipped in vats to Europe for bottling. The Baron decided to establish his
own wine bottle-making plant and established a glass factory on Tantura
Beach. The young Bessarabian born Meir
Dizengoff was appointed factory manager because
of his training as a chemical engineer. Three years after its establishment,
the factory closed. The majestic factory building houses a display of
historic documentation and exhibition of items from the factory with a
description of Baron de Rothschild’s philanthropic activities. The museum is
also the home of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Institute of
Archaeology, the Israel Exploration Society and the Dor Archaeological
Expedition.

Jerusalem Tiyul with a Night
Spectacular
Monday 14 June
Guide: Sharona Liman
We
have changed the program of our 3- day tiyul to Jerusalem and condensed the
highlights into one day. Our day will start at the
“The Good Samaritans Inn”
Mosaic Museum.
This
archeological site near Ma’ale
Adumim is the only mosaic museum in the country and one of just three in the
world.
Lunch
will be at the Liberty Bell Garden
where you’ll be able to buy drinks but you should bring
your own food. Our day will continue at the
Herzl Museum where we will have an
interactive look into the Jewish world according to
Herzl's insights and his bold aspirations and disappointments during
his stormy personal journey.
This will be followed by a walking tour of Ein
Kerem , the picturesque neighborhood, with its
charming houses, arches, churches and stone-paved paths.
We
will visit the Mamilla Project
- a
$400
million commercial and housing district. There will be time to browse and,
for those who wish, to take the opportunity to window shop as well as have
supper at one of the many kosher eateries available.
Our day will finish with an exciting
show at the
Tower of David.
The
walls of the Citadel are the stage for a night-time celebration of light and
sound. The story of Jerusalem unfolds through giant virtual reality images.
