Israel is a small densely populated country. For reasons that may be obvious, successive Governments have ignored or neglected environmental issues.

This is a state of affairs that can no longer be tolerated. The Environmental Committee exists to bring current environmental problems to the attention of the AACI/English-speaking community, and to act as a conduit for positive action in this area. In the past two years we have had meetings and discussions.

We have been active in advising the Netanya Mayor and municipality on the needs of older people, (including ramps and banisters at intersections and repaving streets), cleanliness of the town center, problems of water conservation, inappropriate building construction in Netanya, and the protection of the Iris Reserve and the Winter Pond.

Subjects that have been actively considered are recycling (paper and bottle) and the development of an inter-urban train system to reduce road travel, and so on.

The Chairman of the Environmental Committee is also a member of the Netanya Public Advisory Committee on the Environment. Regular reports of activities are printed in the Bulletin.

Volunteers for participation in environmental activities are requested to contact the AACI Office.
