Robin Leslie
will review A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini,
author of The Kite Runner.
This is the story of two young women in Kabul, whose fates become entwined by their
forced marriage to Rashid, an old shoemaker who makes them wear the
burka and treats them "worse than a cat". The book is the painful and at
times violent, yet ultimately hopeful story of two women's inner lives.
Hosseini's narrative captures the intimate details of life in a world
where it is a struggle to survive, skillfully inserting this human story
into the larger backdrop of recent history.
