Anemones and Settlers of the Northern Negev

February 6, 2020-8:00 am

Anemones and Settlers of the Northern Negev

Thursday 6 February (Please note new date)

This tiyul has been scheduled  to see the anemones (kalaniyot) which bloom for only two weeks each February. We will also hear about the different people living side by side in the Northern Negev region.

Our guide Leiah Jaffe will join us and take us on a short stroll to feast our eyes on the wonderful seasonal treat of bright red fields of anemones (kalaniyot).

Our next stop is Ora’s Yard in Moshav Kfar Maimon.  Ora was born in Yemen and is married to Reuven, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor.  They have a wonderful orchard of 120 different kinds of trees, some of them quite rare and exotic. We will eat our packed lunch there.

After lunch we go to the Joe Alon Center (Museum of Bedouin Culture). The Museum displays traditional objects and cultural activities from the tribal nomadic Bedouin way of life in the desert. Spiritual traditions and everyday objects are on view in an attempt to preserve this way of life which is quickly disappearing as the Bedouin population becomes more settled and modernized. A Bedouin hospitality tent with traditional tea and coffee awaits us at the end of the tour.

Our final stop of the day is at the nearby Lakiya Desert Embroidery Center, which displays the beautiful embroidery carried out by Bedouin women.
