Talking About Books
4.00 pm Tuesday 27 August
In August, we are discussing The Cut Out Girl by Bart van Es. Winner of the 2018 Costa Book of the Year award as the year’s most enjoyable book, this biography is a moving account of events in the life of Lien De Jong, a Jewish “hidden child”. The author, now Professor of English Literature at Oxford University, reconstructs Lien’s traumatic childhood which included, in 1942, being sheltered by his grandparents in the Dutch resistance, before being moved to another family. He managed to trace Lien (now 85) and to discover from her how she had later fallen out with his family, breaking away from them through a simple misunderstanding. The book has been described as “sensational and gripping”.
