From the Ashes to Rebirth – DP Camps in Europe After the Holocaust

11.00am Wednesday 1 May

Gila Stamler Vogel and Shoshana Bellen met by chance when Channel 1 filmed a program for Holocaust Remembrance Day last year. They quickly realized that, even though they had never met, they knew about each other through Gila’s father, Max Stamler ז”ל, who was a past Chairman of Netanya AACI during the years that Shoshana was its director.  They also realized that their families had more in common than just AACI. They have come together to share two personal family stories that focus on the special aspect of Holocaust history – DP Camps.

Gila will talk about her parents, Max and Helen Stamler, who were in Germany at the end of WWII. Max worked for the American army and Helen volunteered in the DP camps established by the US Army.  Gila recently discovered home movies and photographs that Max took at various DP Camps near Berlin which depict the life of Holocaust survivors at the end of the war.

Shoshana was born in one of these camps to survivor parents and she will discuss the role and impact of the camps and will specifically speak about DP Camp Foehrenwald where she lived with her family until August 1949. Foehrenwald was unique because it was the longest operating DP Camp and only closed in 1957.  In 2013 a group of German residents created the Badehaus Society with the purpose of renovating the former Bath House/Mikveh of Foehrenwald into a museum/study center.  In October 2018, Shoshana was guest speaker at the official opening of the museum which honors her parents and the thousands of Jews who passed through the DP Camp on their way to a renewed life after the horrors of the Holocaust.
