In the Footsteps of the Hagana in Netanya

Wednesday 22 April

In June 1920 the Hagana, the main paramilitary organization of the Jewish Yishuv in Mandatory Palestine between 1920 and 1948, was formed. The Hagana became the core of the Israel Defense Forces.

To honor the 100 years’ anniversary of the Hagana and just before Yom Ha’atzmaut, we have arranged a bus tour of Netanya to follow the footsteps of Hagana events that happened in Netanya.

We will be guided by Bili Eliaz from the Netanya Historical Museum. Our tour includes

  • The Alexandroni Brigade Memorial at the site of the Alexandroni units’ headquarters during the War of Independence
  • British army camps in Netanya
  • Tobruk Workshop – did the Hagana know where the British Sergeants were held?
  • The Grace and Truth Synagogue with its hidden arms store beneath the shul’s bamah
  • The water reservoir on Petah Tikvah Street – the pool of the Revisionists
  • Mizpe Hayam lookout, Aliyah Bet
  • Esther Cinema – monitored and defensive workers
  • Gad Machnes Street – Night of the Whipping
  • Corner of Shaar Hagai and Herzl Street – on 1947, one day after the day of the UN Resolution, Arabs fired upon a Jewish public bus on its way from Netanya to Jerusalem and five Jews were killed. It is believed this was the event that triggered the outbreak of the War of Independence.
