Israel, Annexation and the West Bank

Guest Lecturer: Omer Benjakob

8.00pm Tuesday 16 July

A few days before the elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would annex the West Bank if he is reelected. Although it is unclear if he will make good on his promise, the statement highlighted how annexing the settlements to Israel proper is increasingly dominating the right wing agenda. Historically, a radically different version of annexation was also endorsed by some on the far left as well. In this talk we will understand the different versions of annexation being discussed on both the right and the left, what they mean for the two-state vs one-state solution and what the possible fallout from such a move would be.

Omer Benjakob is a news editor at Haaretz. He was born in New York and raised in Tel Aviv. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy and is pursuing an M.A. in Philosophy of Science. His opinions are his own and do not represent the paper. In April Omer presented at Netanya AACI an excellent overview of the political parties.
