Jerusalem: 101 Years from WW1 through to The Age of Trump

Guest Lecturer: Ambassador Arthur Lenk

8.00pm Monday 16 December

Ambassador Arthur Lenk recently  retired after 23 years as an Israeli diplomat. He served as Israel’s Ambassador to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland from 2013-2017 and as Ambassador to Azerbaijan from 2005-2009. He also served as Director of the Department of International Law at Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2010-2013. He generally chose more complicated postings, arguing that simple relations tend to run themselves organically but complex relationships need close professional guidance. Ambassador Lenk was born in the United States in 1964 and emigrated to Israel in 1982 where he served in the Israel Defense Forces as a medic and studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is married to Ruth (our new art teacher) and they have three grown daughters. He now lives in Netanya and works promoting unique Israeli innovation across Africa and other developing regions.

With the moving of the US Embassy to

Jerusalem in 2018, the status of the Holy City is once again in the news. Of course, it has always been in flux, long before General Allenby walked through the Jaffa Gate in 1917. The politics and conflicts of 1948 and 1967 dramatically impacted Jerusalem’s status as have the 50 years of unification. What did Trump change? What is coming next for Jerusalem?
