Jerusalem: From the Exodus of the Old City to the Six Day War

Jerusalem: From the Exodus of the Old City to the Six Day War

Monday 25 May

Just a few days after Jerusalem Day our guided walking tour focuses on the development of Jerusalem in the one hundred years preceding the Six Day War.

We start our day at Mishkanot Shananim, the first Jewish neighborhood built by Moses Montefiore outside the walls of the Old City on a hill directly across from Mount Zion. Our bus will take us to Machane Yisrael – the lesser-known second neighborhood outside of the walls, a communal neighborhood built by and for Maghreb (western North Africa) Jews.

Our next stop is Nachlaot a grouping of 23 courtyard neighborhoods, known for its narrow, winding lanes, old-style housing, hidden courtyards and many small synagogues. Whilst in Nachlaot we will stop to eat our packed lunches or buy a quick snack from one of the local eateries.

After lunch we’ll walk the line of divided Jerusalem from IDF Square to Mandelbaum Gate which from 1948 to 1967 was the UN crossing from Israeli to Jordanian occupied East Jerusalem. We end our day at Givat Hatachmoshet (Ammunition Hill) with its 360-degree view of Jerusalem and hilltop memorial to the soldiers that fell there in 1967. We will tour the museum with its bunkers, old tanks and 3D model of Jerusalem on the eve of the Six Day War.
