Olive Oil and Spice

Monday 11 November

And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure olive oil beaten for the light, to cause a lamp to burn continually. Exodus 27

The olive tree is well-known as a precious source of oil for nutrition, medicinal products and cosmetics. This full day tiyul will be a fascinating encounter with the world of olive oil and spices, taking us to four different locations.

We start our day at Bet Lechem Hagalilit at the Galili Olive Oil Visitor’s Center. A hidden gem in the northern Jezreel Valley: a modern eco-friendly boutique olive oil mill, reviving an 8000 year old local tradition of olive oil creation. We will experience manual olive picking, learn about the unique ecological olive oil extraction process and, for dessert, we will taste a variety of the fresh locally produced olive oils.

Our second stop is at the Derech Hatavlinim Herb Farm. This large farm produces an extensive range of herbs, spices and blends for culinary and medicinal uses in Israel and around the world. We will eat our packed lunch here.

We will then travel to Kibbutz Magal where the Masik brand of extra-virgin cold-pressed olive oil is made only from olives cultivated locally.  Our last stop is the Salt and Pepper Museum in Hadera which is a fun display of the biggest personal collection of salt and pepper shakers in the world, with over 37,000 unique pairs, each with an amazing story from the museum’s owner, Eitan Bar-On.

Depart: Young Israel 8.45am, Kikar 8.55am, Yona 9.00am, Tennis courts 9:05am

Return: Approx. 5.30pm

All Tiyulim fees include a NIS 20 cancellation fee.
