This is the story of the rescue of the Jews of the Yemen, who were surrounded by hostile Arabs and the sea and under imminent danger of total destruction. Most people know something of the story, but few know more than some bare generalizations. Now much of the story has come out – the fleet of battered civilian aircraft flying through hostile airspace in the face of the constant threats of attack from the ground and by fighter aircraft, while being compelled to refuel wherever possible. Incredibly, they usually went to an Arab airfield where bribes produced petrol for their machines. The planes were crammed with refugees who had never before even seen an aircraft. Much more is now known about what went on while they were waiting for rescue, and then inside the aircraft during the flights, making this a fascinating story.
