The Baal Shem Tov

August 4-10:30 am

The Baal Shem Tov

10.30am Sunday 4 August

Dr. Mervyn Leviton was a teacher and headteacher at Jewish schools in England and received his PhD from the University of London for his doctoral research into the effect of Jewish primary schools on family life.

Mervyn will be telling us the fascinating story of the life of the Baal Shem Tov and his influence on Jewish life to this day. In the 18th century the Jews of Poland suffered greatly, due first to the horrors of the Cossacks and then  had their hopes raised and destroyed because of the false Messiah, Shabbetai Tzvi. The arrival on the scene of Israel ben Eliezer, to be known as the Baal Shem Tov,  gave Polish Jewry a new heart and a new spirit.  The Baal Shem Tov was the founder of the Chassidic movement which drove away their mood of despair and taught Jewish men, women and children how to pray to G-d with enjoyment and fervour.
