Who Was Aaron Aaronsohn?

Guest Lecturer:  Barbara Pfeffer Billauer

8.00pm Wednesday 14 August

Barbara Pfeffer Billauer holds degrees from Cornell University, New York University and Hofstra University School of Law and has carried out advanced graduate work in Bioethics at Georgtown University and in Public Health at John Hopkins.

Barbara will be speaking about Aaron Aaronsohn. What did he have to do with the Balfour Declaration? Why does it matter?

Most people who have heard of Aaron Aaronsohn think of him as the co-founder of NILI, the nascent Israeli spy operation or as the discoverer of primordial wheat.  Few people know of or acknowledge his role in securing the Balfour Declaration. That document, which laid the cornerstone for the birth of the State of Israel, required the pressure of several individuals to convince the British to promulgate it.  One critical factor was obtaining the support of President Wilson. So, who convinced Wilson, not known for his philo-Semitic views, to support it? Most people agree it was Justice Louis Brandeis, but who convinced Brandeis? Who converted the aggressively secular assimilationist Justice into becoming a devout Zionist and inspired Brandeis to influence President Wilson? Most researchers say it was Jacob de Haas, a Hasidic secretary to Jabotinsky.  Newly found research documents the strange connection between Aaron Aaronsohn and Brandeis and his role in Brandeis’ conversion to Zionism.
