Wind and Birds
Thursday 24 October
This terrific all-day tiyul to the Galillee, will take us to three contrasting places of historical and ecological interest: a Wind Farm, an original Tower and Stockade Settlement and a Bird-Watching Center.
Our first stop is the Ma’ale Gilboa Renewable Energy Wind Farm for a true appreciation of the power of the wind at the new visitors’ center at Kibbutz Ma’ale Gilboa. From the viewpoint of Springs Valley and Gilboa Mountains, we will hear a history of the area and modern Ecological Zionism and the fundamentals of building and running a wind turbine. Our tour includes a walk alongside the wind turbines.
Our second stop is at the reconstructed Tower and Stockade site at Gan HaShlosha. It is a life-size reconstruction of Tel-Amal, the first of the 57 “Tower and Stockade” settlements which were established between 1936-1939 at the time of the British Mandate.
After a break for picnic lunch we drive to Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin in the Jordan Valley to the Bird-Watching Center. With tens of natural springs and many man-made fishponds and farm fields, the Jordan Valley is a magnet for large numbers of resident, wintering, breeding and migrating birds. Record your very own “tweet of the day” from the numerous varieties of pipits, wagtails, warblers, buntings, or even oriental honey buzzards and lesser spotted eagles (to name just a few) to be found here, in a most wonderful celebration of bird life
